Most of the time, you don’t give your heating and air conditioning much thought. As long as it runs as it should, it’s out of sight, out of mind. But what if your HVAC unit is making some strange sounds? Let’s take a look at three of the most common sounds and what they mean.
#1: Squealing
Squealing in your HVAC system is not only annoying, but it also indicates a problem. Squealing or screeching can mean that there is a fan belt issue. Squealing can also mean the motor needs lubricating. Regular maintenance should take care of this, but if you hear screeching or squealing, your HVAC company can assess the noise and come up with a fix.
#2: Rattling
Rattling from your heating and cooling system could mean an issue with the compressor. Whether the compressor itself is failing or there’s a problem with some of the compressor components, an HVAC technician can repair it and get rid of the annoying rattle.
#3: Hissing
Hissing often means something hot is hitting something cold, but with your HVAC, that’s not generally the case. If your AC is hissing, it could indicate a refrigerant leak. If you hear a hissing in the summer, turn your system off and call for service. If your furnace is hissing, one common issue is a leaking duct. In either case, the best thing to do is call in a pro.
