Why Is My Furnace Blowing Cold Air?

Furnace blowing cold air

A change in the seasons isn’t exactly when you want to discover that your furnace is blowing cold air. But, in many cases, knowing the cause of such issues can help you prevent them from happening in the future. Here are just a few reasons you may be experiencing no heat from your furnace and what you can do to restore your home’s cozy comfort ASAP.

Wrong Thermostat Setting

Your furnace could be blowing cold air because that’s what you’ve told it to do. Most thermostats include options for AUTO and ON. If your thermostat is set to ON, the fan will run continuously and could be pushing cold air through your vents. When you set your thermostat to AUTO, your furnace should only run the fan during heating cycles, delivering warm air only.

Dirty Air Filter

Because your furnace pushes air through a filter, it’s important to occasionally check the filter for dirt or dust that can inhibit airflow. A dirty filter keeps air from moving through your system as it should and can actually cause your unit to overheat and shut down.

It is a good practice to replace your air filter when the seasons change or when you make the switch from running your air conditioner to running your furnace, or vice versa. A clean air filter will play a key role in ensuring your furnace does not blow cold air.

Pilot Light Is Out

The pilot light is the source that initiates the heat your furnace will deliver. If your pilot light is out, you can guarantee you will receive no heat from your furnace. For your furnace to work correctly, your pilot light needs to burn fuel so that, in turn, it can heat your home.

If you need to relight your pilot light:

  • Turn off the power to your furnace.
  • Turn the furnace reset switch to OFF.
  • Allow any escaped gas to clear.
  • Turn the reset switch to PILOT, and light the small area containing the outgoing gas.
  • After the pilot is lit, turn the reset switch to ON.
  • Lastly, turn back on the power to your furnace.
